    Hi Greg,
You have been on my mind lately, so thank you for the update. I am sorry the news was not better, but as you said, it could be worse. In fact whenever I have started to feel sorry for myself in the past 2.5 years, I have heard your voice reminding me that it can always be worse. One of the first posts I read of yours was the one in which you told us about your good friend who had a terrible accident while cutting down a tree.
You have a loving family at home and another one here on this site. Even if you had neither of those, you have God on your side. But since you have all three of these powerful forces on your side to give you strength, comfort, laughter and help whenever you need it I know you will weather this storm. Take care my good friend.

Hi Urbanlamb, so sorry we have to meet this way. I was diagnosed 2 yrs ago at the age of 40. My bladder cancer was muscle invasive, so I had my bladder removed and an Indiana pouch constructed. As scary as all that sounded when I first heard about it, I can tell you that life can return back to (almost) normal after having bladder cancer. The other posts before me have given you some pretty good advice. All I can add is that bringing a (strong) friend to your appointments will be a big help – to help you remember which questions you want to ask, and what the doctor said once you have left the office. Stay positive if possible. We can’t change our reality, but we can change how we look at our reality and how we face our reality. Good luck and please keep us posted.

    Take care,

    Hi Cathy,
I had my RC and Indiana pouch construction in 2011. Perhaps I can give you some information about what life is like with an IP. Once the IP is functional and stretched to its final capacity, it is a continent diversion. So accidents are few and far between. For me the advantage of the IP is that even wearing a bathing suit, no one knows I have a urinary diversion.. The disadvantage is that I cannot void without medical supplies. I need to insert a catheter into my stoma in order to drain my pouch. I do this every 4-5 hours, depending on how much fluids I have had. The insertion of the catheter does require some manual dexterity, especially when in a public restroom. This may or may not pose a problem, given what you said about your husband’s arm. Dr. Black would be able to give you more insight into this aspect of having an IP. Good luck to you and your husband. If you would like more information, please fee free to send me a private message.

    Hey I wanna play too…

    1. T – some days I feel like this too
    2. F – nah, I think its longer than that
    3. F – I wish I could jump that far – would make my Christmas shopping that much faster
    4. T – a handy skill to have, I’d say
    5. T – hmmm, maybe they are like most moms I know….
    6. T – except on the Grinch, because his heart is so small
    7. T – of course they can’t, otherwise they would be called fish
    8. T – didn’t you watch the episode of CSI where they solved the crime based on the perp’s tongue print?
    9. T – haven’t you ever seen a cat’s ears go crazy?
    10. T – and they are smart enough to hang out in wet sewers and get nowhere near a desert

Hi Tina, Wow, what a journey you and Tim have been on! Hang in there, it does get better. With regards to the food question – what about white rice or soda crackers? I know they helped settle my stomach when I felt nauseous. Eventually, I suggest trying quinoa – if you have never tried it, it is a grain that can be substituted for rice, but is loaded with protein, so will help give Tim some extra energy and strength. If the vomiting continues, I would keep calling the doctor’s office til Tim can be seen.
As for the other question, as I am not equipped with that particular organ, I can’t give you any advice there. Other than saying that the value of a great home care nurse is priceless. Often times, they can tell you what the problem is and the best way to treat it. Conversely, sometimes an inexperienced nurse can inadvertently make things worse by they way they change the dressings or reposition the catheter. If that happens, don’t be shy about telling them when something they have done doesn’t feel right. Good Luck.

Hello all, just wondering if anyone has the opposite bowel issues following an RC – very loose bowel movements. I have gone from eating whole grains & lots of fruits & veggies pre-cancer, to eating more white bread & cutting back on fruits & veggies post-RC. How’s that for irony? I am concerned about balancing overall nutrition with not having to race for the bathroom 3-4 times a day. Has anyone found this balance?
