Hello BCC from Calgary:
My wife had blood in her urine and was diagnosed with BC by ultrasound in the spring of 2011. She had a TURB in early July 2011. It was determined that her cancer had grown into the bladder wall (Stage 2b). She was scheduled to have her bladder removed in September 2011.
Prior to the interview with the surgeon, we had stumbled on an alternate treatment. It involved removal of the tumour (already done in Calgary) followed by an intense 7-week regimen of intra-arterial chemotherapy, and radiation.
We think that the Ottawa General hospital was the only place in Canada where this procedure is performed. At my wife’s request, her urologist in Calgary was very gracious in referring her to the team-lead doctor in Ottawa and offering to do the post-treatment followup. He also kept her in his surgical queue in case she were not accepted by the screening process in Ottawa.
She was accepted into the Ottawa system and the medical costs were covered by Alberta Health. Her treatment began in late September and ended in early November.
The urologist in Calgary has done all the followups (cystoscopies and CT scans) and she has been clear since November 2011.
