ParticipantOkay I understand a little bit more about Hematuria and getting into seeing a Urologist. I have had blood in my urine for the past two years that seems to come and go. Since October the color of the urine is darker and I have had multiple episodes of sloughing of skin and blood clots.
After multiple letters from my doctor’s office identifying my case as urgent; I had the Cystoscopy done a little over one week ago and the Urologist had taken a biopsy at that time. The only thing the doctor said prior me leaving is I have a tumor and we will be seeing a lot of each other in the future.
Yesterday I received a letter in the mail that my CT Scan will be scheduled for June; there was no other information such as type of tumor, no results from the biopsy. And my own Family doctor read the Urologists notes, there was no information at all as to of what type of bladder cancer I am dealing with.
My wife is just now finishing up on her treatments for Breast Ca and we both are surprised at this Urologist lack of care in that he has a 60 yr-old man with diagnosed Cancer Ca and May is my date to have a CT Scope and who knows how long the surgery will be after this.
When my wife was diagnosed with Breast Ca there was a great rush to have the tumor surgically removed as this gave her the best odds on survival rates. Why is surgery or Bladder Ca not taken very seriously, in what I am reading Bladder Ca is much more complicated if not gotten to early enough. In that many of the options are gone it it is invasive cancer.
Do we have a shortage of Urologists that have this kind of wait times here in Alberta are normal. I would say that what he is doing would be possibly pushing towards malpractice due to the fact that he stopped at stag one; identifying the patient has a tumor and will wait another 2 ½ months to identify what type of tumor that it is. Hopefully there is some people here in this forum that can enlighten me a little about Bladder Surgery removal an associated times involved.
Does anyone have a name of an Urologist that is taking patients and is not working out of the Kaye Clinic? They seems to have a production plant for surgery there and I think I should at lest try to get an earlier CT scan. I tried going to the ER last evening but and they did for me was flushed the fluids around in the Bladder it self removing some of the blood clots. They refused to do a CT scan saying I’m already under the care of a Urologist.

Jack MoonKeymasterI waited only 1 week from my cystocopy to getting a Turbt (removal of tumors). Having to wait 2 1/2 months is totally unexceptable. At the very least he should have given you the results of the biopsy he took during the cysto and sent a copy of the pathology report to your family doctor.
I would suggest you either contact the Urologist’s office and ask for the pathology report or have your family doctor get a copy from the lab.

ParticipantMy experiences with cystoscopies and TURBT’s (tumour removals) were that the wait was brief between the exam and the surgery – 3 weeks at most as I recall. I don’t think a CT Scan is needed to identify the type and grade of tumour. That’s done with the pathology from the tumour removal. Something seems “off” with what’s happening to you. Hopefully your family doctor can get the pathology report and maybe help you with the next step in treatment.

ParticipantI would do as Jack suggests, contact the urologist’s office to get the results. June is a long way off to be waiting for any further tests. Failing that I’d go back to your family doctor and see if he could get you a referral to a different urologist. See help from Jack or BCC if it is difficult to get another referral.
The care pathway for bladder cancer patients in Alberta has many challenges and this is one of them. We seem to wait in the dark for each step of the journey and that adds greatly and unnecessarily to the overall mental stress.
Have you been in touch with the Bladder Cancer Support group in Edmonton? They are an awesome bunch and maybe they have some info that would help. (((((HUGS))))))))
