ParticipantHi – I am scheduled for TURBT in early April and was reading on a well known US health forum about some people experiencing significant pain emptying their bladder post procedure. I am trying to be proactive and would like to know if anyone has any experience with either Urogesic Blue and/or AZO Maximum Urinary Pain Relief medications. I spoke with my pharmacist and they are not familiar with either but can compound the AZO medicine (phenazopyridine). I will ultimately discuss with my urologist prior to taking any medication but would like to have some basic understanding or suggestions for potential pain management. Thanks in advance.

KeymasterHello Sick_in_YYC,
I remember after my TURBT 13 years ago, that I felt discomfort, but it was mostly due to the stent that was put in my ureter to prevent it from closing, thus making it impossible to urinate. As I recall the discomfort was not bad. I did have to manage how physically active I was in order to stop the bleeding.Hopefully, you won’t feel any significant pain. I am hoping others might chime in here to share their experience with you and the meds you listed. I personally don’t recall anyone posting regarding those meds, but lets see what happens. As you indicated, talking with your Urologist is best.

KeymasterHello Sick_in_YYC,
when I had a second TURBT several years ago, my urologist suggested phenazopyridine which you cannot buy here in Canada but can get at almost any drug store in the US. I did get some of the AZO in the US and it did help a great deal with the pain. It did turn my urine a bright orange if I remember correctly. My urologist did say that some druggists here can make up the compound but do discuss with your urologist before taking.
Good Luck on your treatment

ParticipantThanks vey much for your help Stever. I will check with my urologist and request a prescription. My pharmacy in Calgary also carries the phenazopyridine drug and will compound for me.
