My mom had her radical cystectomy yesterday and is doing quite well. She has an epidural in for pain control and felt and looked wonderful. She didn’t even need to be in a step down unit-she is on the urology floor 🙂 She is having some issues with low blood pressure and is receiving extra IV fluid. They had her standing and marching on the spot this morning! I am off to see her soon and am hoping she continues to do well! I cannot say enough good things about the care she has always received at St Joseph’s hospital and Dr Shayegan is beyond fantastic. We are truly blessed 🙂

Thanks for the update. I’m so happy she’s doing well. It was a difficult decision but sounds like she will fully recover quickly. There are always some bumps on the recovery road but god willing they will be just small speed bumps. Glad she’s OK,

Today is post op day 6. She was initially doing so well but has been getting confused at night, although last night was better. She has a bit of congestive heart failure from all of the fluid boluses she received and now she is nauseated and will be getting an abdominal xray this morning. I thought they had progressed her diet way too fast – she went from clear fluids one day to a full diet the next with no transition to full fluids, minced etc 🙁

Thanks for your update and I wish you mom get over this very soon and set a good example for my mom (she’s 77 and is reluctant to go thru radical cystectomy suggested by our doctor).

So, it has been 1 month post op for my mom and I cannot believe how fantastic she is doing! You really would have a hard time believing she just went through such a major surgery. She is eating well, walking lots and bowels etc are functioning fine. Not too bad for an 86 year old lady! 🙂 The only thing she needs help with is getting in and out of the shower – mostly because I am paranoid she may slip. I will be doing her ostomy care for her now that home care visits are finished. Even though I really struggled emotionally with the thought of putting my elderly mom through all of this I am so glad we elected for the surgery. She has a quality of life now that would not have been there otherwise. She is a little down emotionally today – the loss of some of her independence hit her hard this morning but we are working through it and she knows she has a few weeks to go to completely heal. She received a very nice surprise today that lifted her spirits tremendously!!! The kindness of strangers is astounding 🙂

Wonderful to hear of her recovery to date. I trust she will continue to do really well and enjoy each day to the full. Ups and downs are not uncommon, both emotionally and physically, but the good days far outweigh those that are less so. Let her know that lots and lots of fellow RC-ers are rooting for her and cheering her on!

That is truly amazing! We can totally understand your mom’s upset but she is in good hands and I am sure she will get back to her normal in no time!

Sandy, it is great to hear your mom is doing so well. The first few weeks are very hard post-RC, but then the improvement becomes exponential. Set-backs are to be expected, but they can be overcome. The important thing is that the diseased portion of her body is gone, and now the healthy parts can get stronger. I am sure your mom knows how lucky she is to have you so involved in her health and in her life.

Thanks for the update on your mom. Wow! is all I can say. She obviously isn’t finished with life. What a fighter. While I haven’t had an RC I have had other major surgeries and can share in the frustration of what it’s like to struggle to get back to normal. It is very hard to give yourself permission to take the time to heal. If she was always a doer then it is understandable on how she feels. Encouragement from you and others will go a long way with this. Continued best wishes. Keep us posted.
