I received the results of my biopsy and the cancer has returned. The are currently working on a treatment plan that could include radiation and/or experimental treatment in the hopes of extending my life. Currently I would have about 6 months. I actually feel better knowing because it allows me to plan what to do with the time I have left. Has anyone else had experience with experimental treatment? Your advice would be most appreciative.

Thank you all for your care and support

    Melinda:
Sorry for your news today. I am embarking on a clinical trial, I think sometime in May. I’ve done as much radiation as can be done and the last chemo slowed but did not halt the cancer progression. I’m waiting a CT scan in mid April to see whether the recent radiation shrank the tumour any. But all that’s really left to try is experimental, knowing full well that from the doc’s perspective, it is to extend life with some quality. I do not know how many months or weeks or days or minutes I have left. Only that I want as many of them as possible to mean something – not only to me but to those who are in my life. With no experience yet, I cannot offer advice. Only encouragement to go forward with head up and purpose strong to pack as much living into life as is possible. Smile lots, laugh more, cry if necessary and plan for what seems to be inevitable so that those who have responsibility have a very easy task. I have just recently pre-planned my funeral. I found it quite therapeutic in that weird sort of way and only wish I could be there to see it!

Sorry to hear about the results of your biopsy. Although not the best result, it’s not the end of the battle. I have heard of patients that have responded well to their treatment plan at this stage, and continue on for years.

I’m not sure where you are being treated, but you may want to look into getting a second opinion at a major center? It may ease your mind to have your file and results reviewed by a different set of specialists. Also there are several bladder cancer clinical trials going on throughout Canada you may want to look into, ask your doctor, the urology department at your hospital, or the people from Bladder Cancer Canada for further information on this.

My cancer also returned last year, I’m currently being treated with the standard primary Gem/Cis chemo treatment, which I am responding well to, but once these chemicals stop working, then they recommend secondary treatments as seen with the clinical trials. I’m lucky that I don’t have any pain, so I don’t require radiation for now. My doctor has already mentioned clinical trials to me, I think he is trying to prepare me for the not too distant future…..

As always, Greg offers up some great advise and encouragement. Treasure your time with your loved ones, close family and friends and find as much enjoyment out of each day as possible.

    Hi Melinda
I was so sorry to read your news. I can’t begin to know what you are feeling. You & your family continue to be in my thoughts & prayers.
My mother was the first in her family & circle of friends to be given a terminal cancer diagnosis. Everyone else close who predeceased her had died suddenly & unexpectedly. She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to say her goodbyes. She was able to mend some relationships, share words of wisdom & make preparations. She felt in control. She believed nothing important was left unsaid or not tended to. She was an inspiration to those left behind.
My hope for you is support, comfort & peace. And the best treatment option available.

Sending you my best Melinda! Strength and warmth of heart. xo

I as I’m sure many on the site would agree, many people have difficulty “saying the right thing” in times like these. Many just stay quiet or find themselves stumbling over words.

You are in my thoughts and prayers!

    Ed
