ParticipantIs there any relationship between golf and bowling? I mean, they both use balls so I guess there could be some connection. But bowling has big balls and golf has little balls. But it takes balls no matter if you play golf or bowling. But what’s the point with either of them? In bowling you throw the ball and against all odds try to hit sticks. In golfing a stick is used to hit something. I know that in golf sometimes the stick gets thrown. Golf makes less sense than bowling though because the transfer of power from the player to the stick and then to the ball which then absorbs the kinetic energy and then moves on an always unpredictable surface with extreme variances in the coefficient of friction. In bowling the transfer of power goes directly to the ball and then down a predictable path (the ally) where the coefficient of friction is the same. So why should one use a stick. Why not just throw the darn ball. Well, in either case I guess you still need balls. So why not spray the balls with a friction reducer, or make the balls with a Teflon coating? And the other thing is that the balls used in bowling are always retrieved. Not so in golf. Well I just don’t understand this.

KeymasterThe advantage of the stick as you call it in golf is very simple. When you hit the ball in the wrong intended direction, and this upsets you, you have a stick to throw. In bowling we you roll the ball in the gutter, you have nothing left to throw if this upsets you. You could kick the ball return but that would hurt. I know that from past gutter shots.
Forrrrrrrrrrr

ParticipantI never ever had a gutter shot. I did have a few simultaneous OAS (other ally shots) which it seems are not acceptable especially when my ball hit another ball rolling down the ally. But hey, I was just a kid, I mean when you’re only 19 years old bowling is a steep learning curve.

ParticipantI see the off topic discussions have taken a more serious tone. Balls? So… Take a really big stick (aka club) to the bowling alley and hit the ball with it. If (when) management asks you to leave, hit management. If you “club” the ball into someone elses alley what are they going to do? You have a club! None of this makes sense to me but it seems appropriate for the topic…maybe.

ParticipantIt strikes me (pun intended) that if you take golf clubs to a golf club, shouldn’t you take bowling balls to a bowling ball! Cinderella took shoes to a ball afterall – though I don’t know if they were golf shoes or not. The clock did strike midnight, however, so maybe they were. Did she have a spare or did she go home barefoot? Not sure. Didn’t read the story far enough I guess.
I think baseball and bowling must have gotten mixed up. You throw a strike in both. Weird, the games we play.

ParticipantI know Bob_M wood respond when he saw “golf”. And of course comes up with Cinderella. Amazing. Actually I prefer football, or rugby. They use a prolate ellipsoid. That is much more related to Cinderella even though she wore Nikes’ to the ball. Now maybe we need to talk about tennis. We could make quite a racket and even lobby.

ParticipantIt would be fun to use rugby rules in golf and bowling meaning you have to get your shot off before everyone tackles you. NOW THAT would be a sport! Speaking of baseball… Wouldn’t it be cool if the batter was allowed to keep (and use) the bat while he ran the bases?

ParticipantYou mean like Batman? Maybe the ball boy, who has the balls, could be the Batboy. Great sequel to Batman.
