I had a strange Sunday today. We had an invasion of ants in our corner bottom kitchen cupboard. My hubby noticed them travelling up the pipe that is in the corner of the cupboard. This pipe is the drain pipe for the kitchen sink and dishwasher. The pipe goes from the kitchen into the basement floor below. We decided to see if there was a hole somewhere in the basement wall thinking that was how the ants were getting in, travelling up the pipe into the kitchen looking for a food source. We had to pull out a shelf unit that was in front of the pipe. Well, we not only found a hole in the concrete floor where the ants were entering but that there was a leak in said pipe as well. The wall insulation was wet and we could see how the water had dripped down the pipe and into the hole. Needless to say it was a day of spraying ant killer, laying down ant traps in various parts of the house, patching the hole and then cleaning up a very messy house that I’d been trying to clean up for the past three weeks.

Even though this will mean a plumbing bill and potentially buying a new dishwasher, it could have been much worse if not for the ants. If they hadn’t decided to pay us a visit that leak may have gone unnoticed for much longer with much worse consequences because of the pipe being behind the shelf unit. So, even though this incident tops off a very very trying month, I consider the ant invasion a blessing. Anyone for a rendition of that kid’s song “The ants go marching two by two, hurrah! hurrah!”?
