ParticipantI agree that it is interesting and there was a comment below mentioning about how even tobacco in its natural state isn’t addicting or cancer causing. It is the chemicals that have been added to cigarettes that have caused the issues so I’m assuming the same for marijuana, cannabis or hashish. When one buys off the street you don’t know what you are getting. If it can be proven that a substance in cannabis can help then the government should regulate its development for consumption and distribution for the treatment of disease. I’m not in favour of people growing their own for medicinal purposes as the temptation to sell is there even if they have a “medical permit” from their physician.
The reason I take this stand is because I lost a brother to drugs and have had marijuana grow-ops in my neighbourhood.

ParticipantThanks for the interesting article, Jack!
If we could all live naturally we’d be much better off, but the chemicals that are added to our food & cigarettes are what is bad for us.

ParticipantHello
The marijuana debate is not a simple one. Ask any addictions counselor about the damage marijuana can do.
On the other side of the coin, my husband just has to speak the word and he can have medical marijuana. Doctor anticipates it would help him tremendously but we made the decision not to. At the time we had two teenage sons plus it seemed our house was always full of other people’s children especially on weekends. Lots of times those teenagers were just needing an escape and a safe place to crash for a few days. I always had a rule that required parental approval before they could actually move into our place (vs stay for a few days). Now that they are all young adults, nothing has really changed except they don’t need parental approval to move into our place. Yes, we have had other people’s young adults living with us. As a result, we did not want medicinal marijuana in the house. Regardless, the potential impression, implied approvals, unspoken permissions, etc. it would leave on these young people: don’t want to go there.
Who said life is black and white?
Take care

ParticipantHi Cheryl:
There was a little girl in the news not long ago who is a severe epileptic. Her mom claims I think it was hashish oil helps reduce the seisures when nothing else has worked. Their GP has refused to issue a new medical permit because of flack regarding the use of it for children.
Even though I don’t like this I understand where the mom is coming from. I used to babysit a severe epileptic boy in my dayhome and everyday was a challenge as I never knew how many seisures he would have on a given day. His folks tried everything – surgeries, different meds, physical and vision therapies, herbal and Asian treatments, vitamins etc. etc. I’ve long lost touch with them as they moved away many years ago and he is a young adult today so I don’t know if that would have helped him or not. It would be nice to know.
This is a difficult topic. I have mixed feelings since I lost a brother to drugs but can see if it is done right and the actual ingredients were extracted to make a beneficial medicine that could be sold properly in a pharmacy then it might be of benefit to some.

ParticipantHello MarySue
I agree this is a tough topic. So many variables. So many abusers. In Battleford there is an older man that wonders around the streets all the time. Can easily tell that his mind is not all there. His walking isn’t what anyone would call normal. One of my employee’s Dad used to be this man’s best friend. Apparently, drugs toasted his brain and the drug of choice was marijuana.
This older man is very friendly and loves to chat. I have stopped and chatted with him a few times and boy, is it obvious his mind is fried. Really unfortunate.
No easy answers to the marijuana question and when you bring in human nature, there is no right answer.
Take care

ParticipantNow that the election is behind us ….
Remember the Liberals promised to LEGALIZE marajuana. The NDP promised to de-criminalize it and the Conservatives wanted the status quo.
In any case … If the Liberals hold true, is it worthwhile to try Cannabis?
Opinions?

P.S. I am 59 years old, call me synical: The Liberals are notorious for talking one way during an election but governing very differently.

ParticipantHello DDep
Interesting. Thought everyone out East loved the Liberals.
Western perspective:
– we are back to the same old same old: East painted red; West painted blue
– Liberals traditionally “buy the election” by offering Quebec and Ontario everything under the sun
– The West pays for the Liberals buying the election. Case in point: National Energy Policy (P. Trudeau years) that brought in Ottawa getting 51% of oil royalties and guarantee for the East that they would never pay more for Western oil than what Saudi Arabia was selling oil for. Now, keep in mind that OPEC oil is called “sweet” oil and is under pressure. Thus the cost to get that oil out of the ground and to a usable refined condition is minimal compared to what the West has to do with the oilsands and the heavy oil that is prevalent in the West. Plus none of it is under pressure so it all has to be pumped to the surface. Comparision: sweet oil is like running water; heavy oil is like molasses at -30C.
– Liberals always get into power because of election promises
– Quebec especially gets favored by the Liberals
– During Liberal years, the West gets screwed over again and again and again. Kind of looks like the Liberals make the West “pay” for not voting LiberalAnyway, life goes on. In four years we will know how much of the above repeats itself then we can have this conversation again.
Take care

ParticipantI didn’t mean this to be a political post.
Once the new Liberal government (keeps its promise) and makes Marijuana Legal will BC afflicted people use it?
I do not know. I am asking for thoughts

If your want a political discussion then:
From my perspective “same old – same old” as mentioned, means today Liberal government, tomorrow conservative government, next Liberal and after that conservative, Liberal, conservative, Liberal, conservative … Einstein said, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting a different result”.
For National elections, In Atlanitic Canada you put a monkey up with a Liberal sign and it will get elected.
In Alberta, you put a monkey up with a conservative sign and it will get elected. Quebec and BC are entertaining: NDP, Liberal, Conservative, Green and Bloc Q. Ontario is just insane.I once flew from Ottawa to Calgary and had the opportunity to sit beside a Conservative (ex-Reform) MP. One thing he said to me (about his experience on the campaign trail during his door to door talks) that I ingrained in my memory and recall frequently: “Never OVERESTIMATE the intelligence of the Voting Public !!”
The bottom line, Lets see if the Liberals hold true or will they do the traditional Liberal thing and break/ignore their election promises.

ParticipantHello DDep
BC people using marijuana: I would think some will go that route especially those looking for pain control in their last days. For prevention, would be interesting to see stats on use for BC people.
For legalized marijuana, I go back to the comments of addictions counselors. They say that, without a doubt, marijuana is addictive and can definitely lead to harder drugs. If anyone sees pretty bad stuff with addictions, it is an addictions counselor.
FYI: I have never used an addictions counselor. While my sanity is questioned quite often by my husband, I have no addictions. I do know people that have struggled with addictions that leads to me knowing of the addictions counselors.
In your list of monkeys with signs, you forgot Saskatchewan and its monkey with a conservative sign getting elected. Other than Ralph Goodale, Liberal. Not sure if there is anyone left in his riding that remembers a time when someone other than Ralph represented them in Ottawa.
Take care

Participantthanks for the interesting read Jack. Pretty cool! I didn;t know that about cigarrettes but it makes sense that the added chemicals are worse than the tobacco itself
