ParticipantI am having a flare-up of thrush under my urostomy flange, and I know how to treat that, but having this issue reminds me that I have been meaning to ask about a more day-to-day problem I have when a worse problem, like my current one, isn’t plaguing me. That is that even when my skin is at its best, there still is a sort of impression of the flange that is impressed into the skin. I guess that must be normal, because I can’t think of any way to make that go away. Is there anything that could or should be done about that kind of thing?

KeymasterHello Jim,
Here is a reply I received from a another patient after he read your post.
”I’m a relatively new user of urostomy products. It has been 12 weeks now and its been a trial and error situation for me. I have been having issues with my flanges for some time where I would leak after only a day after installation. I was getting blisters and painful rashes that we’re now getting control of. It appears I’m sensitive to Elastoplast or similar items. My Urostomy nurse has put me on a steroid inhaler ( not to breath in but to spray over the flange area ) I’m getting good results using that so maybe that can help with the thrush situation. I have indentations where the flange is applied constantly. I’m now giving the area a 20 -30 minute airing once a week where I use a larger syringe turning it around where the plunger side is applied over the stoma with a tube on the other side directing urine to a container. This seems to help a lot. Sure hope these ideas are helpful.“
I hope this helps you.

KeymasterHello Jim,
Here is another reply I received from another patient.
“For me even though my skin is in good condition I still get that “impression” and it looks redish to some degree. I now consider that “normal” for me and I do not get any itching or other side effects from this “impression” area.”
I hope this helps…

KeymasterHello again Jim,
Here is one more reply I received from another patient.
“There will be a slight imprint. To minimize it I rotate the flange since I use a 2-piece Hollister. It’s been over 2.5 years and no problem. Also I use a skin barrier spray (Coloplast).”
My best,
