In collaboration with UTS, the University of Melbourne, LaTrobe, UNSW and Monash University, we are conducting aninternational study exploring LGBTQI+ experiences of cancer and cancer care using survey, interview and photovoice methods.
We are interested in the experiences of LGBTQI+ people who have had cancer, or who have had medical intervention to reduce cancer risk, across all cancer types and age groups. We are also interested in the experiences of LGBTQI+ cancer carers, and people who have cared for a LGBTQI+ person with cancer.
We will use this information to develop better information and support for LGBTQI+ people with cancer and carers – communities described as an “invisible diversity” in cancer care.
The project is funded by an Australian Research Council Linkage grant, in conjunction with the Prostate Cancer Foundation, Cancer Council NSW, National LGBT Health Alliance, AIDS Council of NSW, Breast Cancer Network Australia and CanTeen.
We are committed to recruiting participants internationally, in the hopes of hearing as many accounts as possible and maximising what we can learn about the LGBTQI+ cancer experience from this study. We are particularly interested in the experiences of people impacted by bladder cancer, as they are often underrepresented in general cancer research.
We were hoping you would be able to distribute the details of the study to your members via social media, your discussion forum and your email newsletter, if possible. We have prepared a brief description of the project which can be shared as follows:
Researchers from Western Sydney University are conducting a study to understand LGBTQI+ experiences of cancer and cancer care.
We are interested in the experiences of all LGBTQI+ people who have had cancer or medical intervention to reduce cancer risk, as well as their carers and LGBTQI+ people who have cared for someone with cancer.
We will use this information to develop better information and support for LGBTQI+ people with cancer and carers. Take part in the study:
