ParticipantWe, Greater Vancouver region support group has started a new awareness campaign. It does not cost much, in most cases no cost. It will require individuals to spend some time, but it will be minimum. We have decided to call the awareness campaign – “Operation Bookshelf”. Operation Bookshelf campaign it to have bladder cancer related books on a shelf in public libraries. The idea came when one of our support group members went to a local library to look for bladder cancer related books, he could not find any though he found several shelves were occupied with books on breast cancer and prostate cancer. We did online search of the public library of municipalities and districts which have its own public library system. Then, we checked their online catalog on bladder cancer, prostate cancer and bladder cancer. Greater Vancouver and Fraser River region have 13 different public system for population of about 2.5 million people. In total of 13 different public library system, the number of cataloged books, including e-books and audio books on Breast Cancer are 1,210, Prostate Cancer are 287 and Bladder Cancer are only 8. According to the data from Canadian Cancer Society, in 2017, 26,300 breast cancers, 21,300 prostate cancers and 8,900 bladder cancers were diagnosed. Bladder cancers are 34% of breast cancers and 42% of prostate cancers. For reasons I do not know, bladder cancer is under represented even in our public library system. So, we are hoping that at least one bladder cancer book is on a bookshelf of each public library system. That is why we have started “Operation Bookshelf”. We believe it may apply to other cities in Canada. For example, in Toronto Public Library System, 561 are found for breast cancer, 124 are found are for prostate cancer and 19 are found for bladder cancer. So, this issue looks like systemic through out Canada.
Just to be sure that we are only raising awareness of this seems to be an issue by providing the relevant data, but leave it to individuals if they want to request a requisition to the public library of their municipalities and decide which bladder cancer book they like to order.
In Greater Vancouver Support Group, we have provided those data along with a sample of books on bladder cancer available on Amazon.CA to members of our support group. See below for our researched data. If you want the sample of books available on Amazon.Ca, please send me a request and I will send it to you. You can also just do search on Bladder Cancer on Amazon Book.
Unfortunately, we could not find any book with Canadian perspective. We would like to see books written by Canadian doctors and patients in future, so we can request those books also to libraries across Canada.

KeymasterHi, Joe
Great initiative! I help stock the reference library at KGH hospital with our BCC print material. I will now check the university med library and a couple of public libraries here in Kingston.
Would be interested in your book selections.

ParticipantHi Joe:
I found some BC book online through the Indigo books website. I think you have a couple of the titles listed above. This is a great idea. That is one of the main things that I hear from people when dealing with patient support group calls. Everyone wants information. Patient written books are valuable because that is what people want. Newbies want to hear from the more experienced about what to expect and how to get through it. Thanks for starting this. ((((HUGS))))

ParticipantYes I am aware of her work in progress. When her book is finished and published, There should not be any problem of libraries adding her book to it the collection of a library even if there are a few bladder cancer books. The trick is to add “Canada” in the title of the book, i.e. ” Bladder Cancer Patients Stories – Canadian Perspectives”. The reasons are as follows. There are only a handful of bladder cancer books aimed at general public anyway and they are mostly American. Secondly, there are so many breast cancer books and prostate cancer books on shelves of public libraries. The third reason is that when I checked prostate cancer books, the book which always showed up in every library is “The Canadian Guide to Prostate Cancer”. I am guessing that is how the book selection department checks if a new requested book is redundant or not. It’s all marketing though I have no idea how to market books. Anyway the goal of Operation Bookshelf” is increase awareness of bladder cancer among general public and the strategy is to put as many books in public libraries, which has ” bladder cancer” in the title .
Finally, we got the first book was ordered and now sits on a shelf which has cancer books. Below is the picture before and after the bladder cancer book was ordered. Also see there are many breast cancer books and prostate cancer books. I wonder if they had a similar campaign.
Anyway, the Vancouver region support group wants to challenge all other support groups in Canada in Operation Bookshelf Campaign to decide which city gets the most bladder cancer related books “newly ordered” and put on a shelf in public libraries.
Do you know how I can access to email address of all in person support groups in Canada?

KeymasterGreat work Joe! I run the in-person support group in Hamilton. On the main BCC site you can access each of the cities offering in-person support groups. You can also access via the Forum by clicking on the link I pasted in the category for in-person support groups.
Good luck with that.
