ParticipantNew bladder cancer research just out from the World Cancer Research Fund indicates that there is some evidence that greater consumption of vegetables, fruit and tea decreases the risk of bladder cancer.

ParticipantThanks RCS for posting that link, although it doesn’t quite work with the facebook aspect in the front.
Hope you don’t mind but I’ve taken the liberty to provide the link below:

ParticipantThanks for this post. I wish that researchers would also look into exposure to second hand smoke as a cause. I grew up in a small WW2 home where both parents and later two brothers all smoked a lot. Most of my friends parents smoked so I often went from one smoky house to another. Also, looking into if a mother smokes can an unborn child later develop the cancer especially if the genetic/detox component is there. Since I was born with urological birth defects that have a hereditary and smoking as possible causes this has made me wonder about if this was the cause of my BC. That and exposure to pesticides, herbicides growing up in an agricultural area where even DDT was used. To top that off I also dyed my hair for many years and there has been suggestion but no definite proof by the natural health community that long term exposure to dark brown and black hair dyes can increase your risk for BC. I also grew up next to Lake Ontario, swimming both in it and Lake Erie, both known for heavy pollutants and our drinking water came from there. Does anyone know if there is a lot of arsenic in the Great Lakes? If all of these things are a yes, then I was a ticking time bomb to develop bladder cancer.
That being said, I in no way blame anyone. No one knew in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s the dangers of cigarette smoking and exposure to chemical pollutants. NOW, I will really stir the pot – Justin wants to legalize marijuana. Will smoking be allowed in public and just what chemicals will we be exposed to?

ParticipantHello
I agree about the second hand smoke. I am not a smoker. My father was. I used to sit through meals with his lit cigarette sitting in an ash tray less than a foot from my nose and the drafts in the house blowing the smoke directly into my face. Grandpa was also a heavy smoker. The house would quite often have a blue haze of smoke covering the top two feet of the walls and ceiling. At least the ceilings were 10′ but I spent lots of days breathing that air.
Yes, no one knew back then the damage that smoke was causing. The one thing I am glad about is that my Dad passed away before I was diagnosed. It would have killed him to think that he could have caused my cancer.
Anyway, moving on and not wasting time and energy on the past that I can’t change. Will instead focus on the here and now and the future that I can change.
Take care

ParticipantCheryl, I too, am glad that my parents and in-laws passed before my diagnosis. My mother-in-law passed from lung cancer caused by smoking and near the end she also had some dementia (she was almost 84). She had this idea that cancer was contagious and was reluctant to hug family for fear of passing it on despite reassurances from us including a brother-in-law who is a retired physician. I was diagnosed less than 6 months after she was gone and since I was her main caregiver I know she would have freaked out.
My mom would have been guilt-ridden had she known and then found out that second hand smoke could be a possible factor. My dad despite his Alzheimers and dying of prostate cancer had figured out before his passing that there was something wrong with me. Whether he overheard conversation and was able to still understand we don’t know. We never told him directly. During his last days he could hardly speak but I sensed that he knew and I took a chance and decided he deserved the respect of me coming clean. I told him that I had been sick but was now okay and that was why I hadn’t been to visit him very often. I saw the light of recognition in his eyes and he nodded as I spoke. I know that he forgave me for not telling him. My brother didn’t want to tell him because we weren’t sure how much he could understand and with him being so sick we didn’t want him dealing with the extra stress. It was a tough call to have to make.December 18, 2015 at 3:32 am #20081krbeave1@gmail.com
ParticipantMarysue , the Liberal Party’s internal paper on legalizing cannabis is a kind of eye-opening read . So far as it reads their new cannabis laws would make the cannabis industry to a large extent modeled on the present regs for alcohol . The provinces will be able to interpret the laws and regulations to a degree , so no , people won’t be allowed to consume cannabis on the street any more than they can drink in public .
It will be interesting to see once legalization happens how much more research into the properties of the myriad compounds in cannabis there will be.
Anecdotal information isn’t data , so does cannabis actually have an analgesic effect ? If so , which molecules are involved and what is the mechanism ? Are there medications derived from cannabis that could possibly replace the use of opiod painkillers and non-addictive at the same time ? Direct applications in treating nausea during chemotherapy , maybe in the areas of cancer treatment and prevention could be possible . We can only hope .December 18, 2015 at 3:58 am #20083cheryl9
ParticipantHello
Have to put my two cents worth into this. Just can’t resist.
I still go back to the process my husband and I went through with deciding whether he was going to go on medical marijuana or not. His doctor really wanted for him to go this route. We had to do a lot of deep thinking and measuring the pros (pain relief for my husband) and cons (teenage sons and all their friends that hang out at our house). We still stand firmly with our decision not to bring medical marijuana into the house. No matter what theory you come up with, reality will be different. No matter how much we would have emphasized to our children it is only for their Dad’s use, our sons seeing their Dad “smoking up” would have indelible and lasting effects on them. Let alone the risk of the temptation to sneak some and smoke up on their own and with their friends. We decided that there was no way we would be a part of that process.
Two additional comments:
– Denver legalized marijuana. Just check into the calibre of people that are migrating to Denver. E.G., their problems with homeless people and those that don’t have money for their next meal. Then there is the problems with petty theft to pay for the next marijuana purchase…
– Regulating marijuana like alcohol??? Really??? Anyone NOT recall knowing of someone under age consuming alcohol?????Anyway, Justin Trudeau is going to do what Justin wants to do. Regardless of whether it is good for the country or not. I am quite confident that in four years this country will realize the truth that Justin wasn’t ready. Unfortunately, the price we will be paying for this (the 1.4B surplus for the year has already been turned into a deficit from overspending of $4B this year and a cumulative $20B over the next 4 years) will really hurt.
Okay, I will now get off my soap box.
Take care

ParticipantHello
Again.
In regards to this thread for consumption of vegetables, fruit and tea: hey, it is Christmas. Surely some cheating is allowed! I will make up for it afterwards. Promise.
I refuse to disclose whether my fingers were crossed or not while typing this.
Take care

ParticipantAS for cannabis or anything else associated with marijuana, I’m okay with government doing research into what compound if any could be used for medicinal purposes especially for things like nausea and pain. But what I’d prefer is that it is strictly regulated and the products would be in pill form not in cigarette form to be smoked. If everything else remained illegal hopefully that would help benefit patients but not create more problems in society. I lost a brother to drugs and he started with marijuana so nobody on this planet will convince me that it is harmless. My bro would come home from a party high on the stuff and he made life in our house a living hell – punching out doors and walls and scaring my mom out of her wits. I left home as soon as I could to get away from him. Also, if people smoke the stuff regularly they eventually reek of it. A few weeks ago I smelled some on a lady in the grocery store. She appeared loopy and you could smell her several aisles over. Okay, enough said.
This thread was for tea and fruits and veggies…I consume a lot of black, green and herbal teas plus eat copious amounts of fruits and veggies. The good thing for this is now when I get a sweet craving I can be satisfied with a sweet apple or orange not candy or cookies. Yes, I do still cheat a bit and will enjoy Christmas but the point is to have a better diet overall.
