ParticipantAs some of you know I am (along with my members) the local police department’s search and rescue team and I also do some other kinds of work with other LE agencies. well one officer on one of the departments decided to complain that my hair was too long. I wouldn’t have minded except that he did it behind my back and I was told about it. So I asked if this was a discrimination issue as long hair is part of my native heritage. I was pretty ticked off. I hate discrimination. The chief told this guy to leave me alone and that I can have my hair as long as I want it. Great job Chief!

ParticipantSounds like he was just picking hairs. He probably did it behind your back because that is where your hair is!
But seriously, good for your chief. I like long hair. Used to have long hair as a much younger person. Now I just long to have hair.

ParticipantWhat an idiot! Some people just don’t have enough to occupy them. I’m glad that your chief stood up for you. I don’t think that it is anyone’s business how long it is. I used to have very long hair. When I was a cashier the only requirement was that I pin it up. I used to put it up into a bun (shape not bread) with some decorative hairpins. I got lots of compliments on it. I have shoulder length grey/brown hair now and am debating about growing it out again.

ParticipantDid you flatten him? Bet you wanted to.
I happen to like native Americans with long hair so thumbs up for your Chief

ParticipantWhat I really hated was that this person did not have the courage to discuss it with me face to face in private. rather they went to someone else to complain who then attacked me about it at a meeting with others present. that’s not going to happen again. The chief likes me and he doesn’t like people doing those things. They won;t do it again. I also got support from many others who happened to find out about it. I hate discrimination. I am not about to give up my heritage for a few idiots who have nothing else to do with their time. I had asked the president of the group to put it on the agenda for the next meeting so they would have the chance to confront the enire membership and police department and give me a reason for their actions. It seems that the chief took care of them for me. It won;t happen again.

ParticipantYeah, I know what you mean, Jackie. Well they don;t have to worry about it anymore, the chief set them straight. Plus, I haven;t finished with them yet.

ParticipantDiscrimanation of any kind is horrid. I am married to an Asian husband and haven’t had too much trouble as Calgary is really cosmopolitan. HOwever that being said I know my previous supervisor was racist. She didn’t say too much but I know that she disapproved of my marriage – a little late for that as I’ve been married for 32 years. I subtly set her straight that it isn’t the nationality that counts but the person. Good for you Kiowa. You have every right to be proud of your heritage hair or no hair.
