InactiveHi Gang,
Just thought I would let you know Mike is back in hospital in Ottawa. We went in for his CT scan on Monday to get his baseline for chemo. On Sunday we noticed his left foot and ankle were swollen and by Monday his whole leg was swollen. We decided to check with Oncology and they looked at the CT results and decided to admit him. They think he may have a pocket of infection in his pelvis. So they tried to do guided ultrasound today to get a sample but no dice. Today, it looks like the fluid was playing hide n seek with the docs. By this evening, they thought it might be more of an inflammation or a fluid build up from the radiation treatments. Bottom line…they have no clue. So, there he sits waiting for answers yet again. He cannot lift the left leg on his own so they think the tumour in his pelvis in pressing on nerves and even the muscle. They did an MRI today as well so we will see.
I will post an update when I can. Are we having fun yet??? At least we are still laughing…well mostly.

ParticipantMonique,
Thank you for finding the time to keep us updated. I admire your strength! Yes, a sense of humour sure can keep us above the water line….
Hopefully Mike’s team will soon have some answers and relief for Mike (and you).
Sending positive vibes,

ParticipantKeep on keeping on, Monique and Mike. One day at a time with the strength to handle what today throws at us is the only way we can move forward. Tomorrow has its own worries and strength to handle them so today’s the day. You are showing us a good example so thank you. Are you sure it is not just that Mike prefers the hospital food?

InactiveUpdate time
The news gets weirder by the minute. The team has grown to include, Infectious Diseases, Pain Management, General Surgery, Oncology, Urology and a host of others.
Here is what I know for sure.
Mike now has a PICC line and is receiving Meropenem (antiobiotics) for his infection even though they cannot seem to actually find it anymore. The morning after the antibiotics were started, he was able to lift his leg without a problem and the swelling had gone down considerably. Leading us to believe it`s an infection.
They also altered some of the pain meds he was taking because they thought it might be some sort of interaction.
Mike`s neobladder decided to stop working on Tuesday so they put in a catheter and by Tuesday night, all was back to normal. Weird. Now no catheter and neo is working fine.
Yesterday, they did a gastrographic enema…yup, it is as fun as it sounds. They tell us there is a small leak in his bowels and General Surgery will decide what to do. I waited all day for them to tell us that but got no answer by the time I left last night.
He also had a brain MRI because his is very confused at times and their report on that was that his brain shows no sign of cancer but the brain was not quite right. Well I could have told them that 🙂 I am sure if they looked at my brain they would say the same thing. i will be pushing to see that actual report today.
Last test yesterday was a bone scan and then they injected him and he will be going back on Monday a.m. to have another type of special bone scan to see if there is infection in the bone.
If all of these tests come back clear, he is not as confused then they will send him home with the PICC and the antiobiotics will be for 2 weeks.
Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers everyone. And, Greg, he actually eats the food in the hospital which scares me. You would have to pay me some serious money to eat anything they are calling food. Yuck!
We are still hoping to be able to get to that BCC Conference. We have not given up hope yet.
I will update again soon.

ParticipantI think when Mike decided to lift his leg and then he could not pee there had to have been someone who saw the irony in that surely! Maybe it’s just me. Anyway, if he is eating the hospital food then I’m glad he has a PICC line running antibiotics. Seems appropriate even if they cannot now find the infection. It must be troubling for you to have them do a brain scan and find nothing (think about it)! Did the gastrographic enema involve a garden hose by any chance? Sounds nasty. No wonder he is a little confused at times…good grief.
Hope you can still make the conference because that will indicate Mike is well enough and that would be great news. Never give up hope. Sometimes it is the best we’ve got!
Keep smiling Monique and Mike. It will drive the nurses crazy trying to figure out what the humour is.
