As previously mentioned, mom had a RC and Small Bowel Resection March 18, eventually the leakage problem was fixed with Eakage putty. The follow up appt. she had with the Chemo Dr. was strange, he said not enough is known about the benefits of Chemo after having an RC and that she was too frail. We will know more on the 26th when she see’s her surgeon. The ET nurse changed her equipment and all is well with that.

She has been complaining of a sore back for some time and was taken in to E.R. last night, where they discovered she had a Kidney infection, she was only off of antibiotics for 2 day’s before this happened, my question is., how common is this?

Post surgery infection is very common. I’ve not had an RC but from reading on this site and talking to members of my support group that have had one it is a real deal after surgery. It seems to mean a lot of drugs post op. Hopefully others will chime in here soon with ideas.

I also meant to comment that if chemo is to be considered as part of the treatment protocol the doc has to weigh a lot of things; a person’s age, health status etc. Some chemo treatments are hard on the kidneys so if hers are already compromised with infection and she is very frail she may very well not benefit from the treatments. They may cause more harm than good. I would consider having a really big heart to heart with the oncologist about the benefits versus the risks. There is still a big divide among uros about the use of chemo before or after an RC.

When my mother-in-law was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2004 while in hospital with a stomach ailment she was offered a consult with an oncologist. She was 80 at the time and very frail from the stomach issue. She refused saying that she had lived a long time and would live her remaining days as best she could and didn’t want to be sick from chemo or radiation treatments. We were told they were the only options to be considered as she was too frail for surgery and it would only possibly extend her life for a short period not cure the cancer. The doc figured given her frail status she would pass from something else before the lung cancer became really active. Well, she lived almost another 4 years and it was the lung cancer that took her out. However for about 31/2 years she lived a reasonable quality of life albeit in a nursing home.

Also for us personally we have to come to an acceptance about our loved ones that their time is coming and be prepared to let them go, It is hard but it is selfish not to let them go and be free of their suffering.

    Hi,

It would seem that infection after RC is fairly common. My husband, Mike, had lower back pain too and a fever and was rushed to hospital where we found out he had a serious kidney infection that had gotten into his blood as well.

My advice to you is to be vigilant and know the signs. Mike got a second kidney infection a few months later but we were able to get to it much quicker because we knew the signs.

Hope all goes well and clears up quickly for your Mom.

    Thanks for you advice Monique.

No sooner than my mother-in-law finish her antibiotics for the infection, 2 days later she was back in and admitted. After the tests, it was discovered that her kidneys were not draining properly.. She is home once again with a drainage tube and bag from both kidneys, they will be in place for about a week and if it does not fix the problem then stents will go in internally and hook up to her stoma…fingers crossed that all goes well.
She is starting to get a bit depressed about all of this, but thanks to the wonderful people on this site her tears today, are now tears of thanks for complete strangers, you see, today I received a package in the mail, addressed to me but for her, I had NO clue as to what it could be, it came from an address in Calgary…and was a GORGEOUS handmade quilt. We would like to thank the person/persons responsible for this, your kindness has not gone unnoticed.

You are absolutely right Kilowa, there are Angels on this site and they have truly made my Mother-in-Law’s day. I have the Angels address, so the thank you card will be sent, but with no name on it.
