    a FYI…

    All incontinence supplies are a medical tax deduction;

Do have a look at the disabilities section…you may qualify.

We had a look at it, filled it our to the best of our ability; made an appt. with our GP; she agreed; we submitted the form (way after last year’s deadline) and Revenue Canada approved the deduction for us.

Anyone else have info to share?

    Take care,

When I had surgery two years ago, the stoma nurse at the hospital helped me apply for the Assisted Devices grant from the Ontario Gov’t, which was accepted. I receive $600 a year to cover the cost of supplies. At this point I do not submit for Rev Can since my costs are generally covered by the Ont gov’t grant at this point. Should that change, I will look into this. I also wanted to let others, especially Neo recipients in Ontario, know that you can apply for and receive the grant. I keep my receipts for Depends, catheters and gel and so on, to prove that I actually spend money on supplies, should they ever ask for it, but so far they have not.

Thank you, Gord. Much appreciated! I don’t see mention of neobladders on the form, so I’m wondering what you selected.

It was two years ago, in a post surgery haze, but I believe I chose the “permanent urinary continent reservoir”.

We use the medical deduction section on the Income Tax form for all supplies, including guards, Depends, etc. As well, we completed the disability application form….our GP agreed, added a few more items, signed it. We submitted it and it was approved , and the gov’t back dated the disability to Malcolm’s date of surgery.

    Hi everyone

I am a retired CPA. In public practice 30 years.

Yes, there is a disability tax credit (DTC) available. The DTC is entirely different from the CPP disability. DTC has to do with the ability to perform the daily functions of living such as walking, eating, dressing, thinking clearly, incontinence, life-sustaining therapies that consume 14 hours or more of your time per week (excluding travel time which really sucks) and has nothing to do with whether you can work or not. The CPP disability is strictly based on the ability to work.

Do not disregard the value of the DTC. In actual dollars, it works out to around $1,700 a year. If you can’t use it all you can transfer some or all to your spouse or someone you are dependent on. The DTC can also be claimed for prior years to a maximum of ten years. This can really add up. The largest DTC refund I saw was close to $30,000. The best one was a young mother who used her refund as a down payment on her first house.

The DTC has a section where you can self assess before taking the form to your doctor. Hint: go to your regular doctor not your specialist as this usually produces better results.

One hurdle I have seen over the years is people’s pride keeping them from applying for the DTC. Don’t let this happen to you.

    Link to form: http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/E/pbg/tf/t2201/README.html

Copy/paste the form address (if doesn’t show in blue here).

    If this doesn’t work:
    – go to CRA website cra-arc.gc.ca
    – select English or French
    – click on “individuals and families” located in top left hand area in dark blue background
    – click on “find a form or publication” in box at left hand side under “I want to…” It is the last item in box
    – click on “T2201Disability Tax Credit Certificate” in box on right hand side under “Top ten forms”. It is the last item in box
    – select format of form. Remember” fillable form available.

    Good luck.
