I had bladder spasms after my TURBTS and during BCG treatments. My bladder absolutely hates being invaded. Not that I blame it. I have put up with invasion in that area since 1963. Seriously, I suggest applying a hot water bottle or heating pad to your abdomen. When I was in the hospital the nurses packed hot blankets on my tummy , between my legs and on my lower back. They would then cocoon me in a couple more. I was toasty warm and the extra heat eased the spasms. I repeated this process at home with a heating pad after BCG treatments were done. Hot baths with Epsom salts help with muscle aches. Hang in there. It is tough but will be worth it to save your bladder. I’ve had 21 treatments and am more than 3 years cancer free. As Jack Moon says BCG=Bladder Cancer Gone

Hi, I had a second BCG today and feeling some of the same symptoms as last time and some new. Burning in urethtra is not going away at all this time. 5-6 hours after the treatment I noticed white discharge (not when urinating) and is still not clearing up (it is 9 hours after now).
Has anyone experienced this ? Can this be a sign of infection?
I read somewhere that drinking full glass of water with one teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda can help reduce the pain and burning. Anyone tried that?
Your response will be appreciated. Thank you!

When I got into the later treatments I found that my urine was white/cloudy for a few hours. Being female I didn’t notice whether this was a discharge or not. I just drank a lot of water – I mean lots after each treatment. I also found that avoiding caffeine of any kind helped my bladder tolerate the BCG better. Peppermint tea is bladder friendly and more alkaline. BCG is very acidic so keeping to a more alkaline diet would probably help. I’ve never tried the baking soda thing for the bladder but it may help. After all we do take TUMS for indigestion and heartburn. Heartburn is caused by excess stomach acid and TUMS are essentially baking soda tablets.

I found I experienced a lot of irritation with the urethra and it didn’t go away. For me it wasn’t infection it was just the fact that the catheter had irritated the urethra and then was further aggravated when voiding the BCG. BCG as mentioned is very acidic and therefore caustic to the skin. As a female I figured this out quite quickly. My whole genital area got irritated and inflamed if I didn’t rinse off after each void. This is something men don’t have to worry about. However men do experience irritated urethras. It is like anything else. Some are more sensitive than others.

However that being said if you have any doubts about a bladder infection (which is common during BCG) consult your doc prior to the next treatment. A simple urine test will tell. If you do have an infection you will have to postpone your treatments because you will require antibiotics to get rid of the bladder infection. Postponing your treatments generally doesn’t have much effect on the outcome since BCG is a preventative treatment not a curative one. Curative treatment success rates are often affected by the way the treatment is administered and how well the patient cooperates/tolerates it. BCG is to stimulate the immune system into detecting and destroying any possible remaining cells. The immune effects are in the body for some time and aid in preventing the cancer from returning and lowering the risk of it becoming invasive. I hope this information helps. Keep us posted and good luck with the remaining treatments.

Your family doctor can prescribe specific meds to help with the burning. If the burning continues past 48 hours I recommend you get checked for an infection.
Good luck with treatment number 3.

Last Friday I completed 6 BCG treatments with minimum side effects. From time to time I still have muscle spasm. I checked and there was no infection. On October 03 I will have my cysto and then will know if treatments worked.

Congrats on getting through the BCG. I still think those of us who get through it and live to tell the tale deserve a medal of valour.

I suggest for muscle spasms a heating pad or hot water bottle on your lower abdomen for a bit. I found that I was spastic off and on for a couple of months. It gradually wore off. I think that our poor bladders just get fed up with all the intrusive procedures. Good luck Oct 3rd for your cysto!.
