    Hi Everyone!

I’m safe and dry since I live in the north part of Calgary away from the flood zone. However we have been impacted. Our oldest son, his girlfriend and pets had to move in with us as they were in an area that was under mandatory evacuation. We had to dash to their inner city neighbourhood about 6PM on Thursday to help pack up. Water was already in big pools in lots of places. Police were already banging on doors and shouting with loudspeakers to get out. It took a long while to actually get out of the neighbourhood as there was only a couple of ways out. Everything else was flooded or blocked off by police. It was really scary. We think that their street is still safe according to tweets from their friends. The floodwaters supposedly stopped 1or 2 streets away but they may be damp or wet because they live in a basement suite. We won’t know for sure until they are allowed back in. The area is still without power. Downtown is underwater in many areas and mostly without power. City officials brought the power system down in order to save the transformers saying if the flooding blew them out it would be weeks or months before power would be restored. The overall financial impact will be absolutely huge. My hubby can’t go to work because that is where he works. We lose wages because he is contract but we will survive. My son’s girlfriend was all set to start a new job on Monday but won’t be able to get there until she can traverse the downtown area to the SW quadrant where her company is. My son can go to work since he works in the NE away from the flood zone. We haven’t gone to look, only seen what’s on TV. Whether the Stampede will go ahead is anyone’s guess. It is less that 2 weeks away. The grounds are badly flooded. The Saddledome is badly damaged so they will have to hustle to repair it before the new hockey season starts. We had bad floods in 2005 but it pales in comparison to this.

Our Val Macleod lives in the SE in one of the evacuated areas. I hope that everything is OK for her. I think that the worst is over for Calgary but downstream communities of Medicine Hat, Drumheller and Lethbridge are bracing for their turns now. Say prayers everyone. This has been one h*** of a spring for the prairies as Saskatchewan, BC and Manitoba have had their fair share too.

People have been panicking and going to the grocery stores and buying everything up. That might create shortages for a week or two. I did do a regular shop just before the warnings went out so we’re good but it makes one realize the importance of always being prepared for emergencies.

My friend had near her door water, but she didn’t have to evacuate . That sounds so scary! Happy to hear they are ok.
Keep safe and hopefully dry soon.! xoxo
