ParticipantGoing to have my second bladder resection on Jan 5/15 experiencing pain now. Things look bleak as I have been unable to work for so long I am out of money. Its Christmas and that is hard. My term life insurance runs out next month and renewal is seven times more. Two of my sons have idiopathic liver cirrhosis and there will be a transplant coming up soon for the older one. My ability to help them is shrinking. I have other issues but cant talk about it all. Just needed to vent a little. I look for the good in all things but the other stuff is starting to over power me. I may loose my bladder and that may be the best choice. I don’t really know how to deal with it all. There are probably others out there with struggles and I feel for you all. Life is a ship wreck but we must remember to sing in the life boats. So says Voltaire. I feel as though I am in a life boat of many.

ParticipantCancer can cause financial hardship that is for sure. Do you have access to a social worker through the clinic or hospital? They may be able to find something for you. In Calgary, we have a social worker at Wellspring the cancer support centre and that is her job to help those in need access disability, welfare or whatever. I think you can also check with Revenue Canada to see if you qualify for CPP disability. It won’t be a lot but anything helps right? You would probably need a note from the doctor about your condition. Someone at the tax office should be able to point you in the right direction.

ParticipantMarysue, Thing are a mess right now. Applied for the disability tax credit on depression grounds but was denied. I resubmitted the appication with the bladder cancer but was denied. Told to start a whole new application. Asked my doctor to fill out the disabilty CPP forms that was 3 weeks ago not done yet have asked him twice since, he feels that it will be denied too. I live in a remote area its 6.5 hours by car to the Urologist for the operation. I visit mental health weekly but there is no social worker other than that. My wife and I will have to sell our home soon or declare bankruptcy. Money is gone, living on credit and that is almost used up. I don’t know what to tell my family to make them smile for Christmas. Doctor will not give me a note to return to work which my employer needs. With bladder pain now I don’t think I can even be there. That’s all I can say.

ParticipantYou definitely are facing many challenges and you show a lot of strength reaching out for solutions.
I think the Canadian Cancer Society may have support to offer to you.
Regarding forms, we have filled them out ourselves, then presented them to our docs for signature. This for us, kept things moving.December 22, 2014 at 12:24 am #18423marysue
ParticipantMan, you did not need all this fight on top of everything else. Something tells me that you’ve fallen through the cracks in the system whether it’s because you live in a small community I don’t know. I would check with Ileva to see what path she followed. The system doesn’t seem to be standard in this country – different processes depending on where you live. I just had a thought – would applying for that Chip Home Income Plan be of use to you? I’ve seen it advertised on TV where you can draw on the equity of your home of up to 50%. It will put a debt on your home which may not be right for you but may be a temporary aide? I suggest talking to a banking or finance person to see if this is something worthwhile considering and suitable for you in your situation. You have to be 55 or older to apply for it. It might be a possible temporary thing so you don’t have to declare bankruptcy or sell the home.
