I have been diagnosed with Bladder cancer. It’s stage two. My Cystectomy dates are fixed. Primary round chemo is done last week. Ever since the chemo I have been experiencing dental difficulties and gum pain. Yesterday a sudden pain was felt in my gums and I couldn’t even talk. I went to an emergency dental care in Toronto ( http://www.centenarydental.com/emergency-dental/ ). I’m getting better now but I’m afraid the pain will repeat. Does anyone here have any similar experiences? What should I do to reduce the aftereffects of chemotherapy? Are dental problems associated with chemo, curable? Can chemotherapy cause tooth loss? I have been experience slight burning sensation in my tongue and change in taste too. My physician told me that this is common. What should I do to overcome this? Any suggestions and advice will be a great help. Thank you in advance.

    Hi Katerid

Sorry you are having pain and dental difficulties. I have had NO experience with chemo. As the moderator of this forum many patients do send me links to helpful information for patients. Hopefully experienced chemo patients will reply to your questions. Below is a link with some info from a reliable site that a patient sent me a few months ago. I hope the information assists you going forward.

I didn’t have to do chemo but know of others who had dental issues related to chemo. I suggest asking your dentist for a referral to a dental specialist like an endodontist or peridontist who have training and experience in more challenging dental situations. Lots of dentists and dental specialists do have training in dealing with the challenges that cancer patients have.

When I was undergoing my TURBTS and BCG treatments, I had a flare up of my old friend gingivitis. I went for extra cleanings and used a stronger mouthwash to help cut down on the plaque build up and gum inflammation. This worked in my case. ((((HUGS))))
