ParticipantOK gang, it’s mid month so I decided I’d get this going so I don’t forget again like before. Nothing for me except a routine dermatology checkup because I have a kazillion moles. Good luck to those who do.

ParticipantWell I think I just got my date for my RC – June 14th at St Joe’s in Hamilton. After being diagnosed with BC over Christmas, two cystoscopies, two turbts, 12 weeks of chemo, and a few weeks of anxious waiting, I was relieved to finally have a surgery date. Then the real fun begins!

ParticipantGwj, glad you’ve got the date. You’ve got a terrific surgeon and the Great Physician working for your best interest! Hard to beat that combo.

ParticipantI’m set up for a pre-op assessment on the 6th of June and then its TURBT time on the 18th. Looks like I’ll likely get the single chemo dose as a precaution. Any advice from the TURBT vets out there for a rookie?
All I know is I’m not looking forward to hospital food, everything tastes like broccoli or wet dog! YUCK!

ParticipantEddie:
Mostly these TURBTs are done on an outpatient basis, but I was kept in overnight for the first one (I had 6). Usually in first thing in the morning and home by mid to late afternoon. Don’t be surprised if you are also started on a six week program of treatment following the pathology results, depending on stage and grade. Jack always recommends getting a copy of the pathology report so you know what you’re dealing with. Good advice.
All the best.May 23, 2013 at 10:06 pm #15550marysue
ParticipantI’m a veteran of 2 TURBTS. I was kept in overnight with cath in and it was removed at the ungodly hour of 5am prior to the day shift coming on. I had to be able to pee really good twice prior to discharge and was told to rest alternating with short walks as able. Also don’t lift heavy stuff for 4-6 weeks as the wounds in the bladder are open wounds and need time to heal over. Drink lots of water to keep your urine diluted. Hot baths helped with post surgery soreness as did Tylenol. Some recover sooner but I found it was 3-4 weeks before I felt back to normal. Seek your dr’s advice on when you are allowed to resume driving, lifting, housework, return to work and having sex. I used 6 weeks as a guide for the heavy stuff, took 3 weeks off work and returned on a reduced schedule for another 2. I do acupuncture on a regular basis and I believe that it speeded up the healing. If post surgery treatments are needed the dr or clinic will let you now. It will depend on the stage and grade of the tumours. Mine were high grade which means that they were more at risk for going invasive if they reoccurred. Immunotherapy aka BCG or chemo like Mitomycin C help prevent reoccurences. Best of luck. Let us know how it goes.

ParticipantGwj…….my husband had 2 turbts as well, one locally and the next at The Cleveland Clinic, he had to spend the night both times as 8 months prior he had 4 major stents put in his heart…one thing I always remember is how he says he wished he would have not worried so much before surgery, he lost 20 pounds while waiting from August 8th to Sept. 17th for surgery. As he says, it wasn’t as bad as he thought it would be…its all about recovery, and getting to that point…..at 72 now he is cancer free with the ic, 5 years later,,,,,,good luck with your surgery, you have a team you believe in and thats half the battle!!!! getting on the other side is indeed a journey, your almost there!!!

ParticipantThanks gang!
You are all fantastic, and again….I really appreciate all the input. As they say, knowledge is power!
MarySue, I too will be in for 2 days, but I’m hoping that I won’t be down for up to 6 weeks. I’m a gym goer (3 times a week) and I hope that 2 weeks will be enough to bounce back. My girlfriend and I will be heading to a cottage the week after my TURBT, so the want is to get back to the usual after that 2 weeks off. I will make sure I take it easy as I don’t want to push my luck.
Does anyone know how long after the TURBT they usually set up the next cysto or follow up?
Tinkerbelle, thanks so much for letting me know that GWJ has been cancer free! This really makes me happy and hopeful! My urologist is rather shocked that I’m going through this at 39 years of age, but I’m hoping that will contribute to a quick healing and quick bounce back!

ParticipantEddie M.,,,the turbt done at our local hospital was the determining factor in the final diagnosis, after one nite in the hospital he was free to come home and carry on, he did have a catheter for 12 days, didn’t like it much but I really don’t think it was necessary for that period of time, the turbt at the Cleveland Clinic was much different in that no cath was needed..12 days is a long time, surgery was one month later, so hence my trust in what is done at local hospital rather than major causes me concern as to there expertise…….after his turbt he had some cramping which I called about, seems normal so they say, the other thing was debris was present clots and such.., also normal as if they do scraping its the after math, so don’t be frightened but report such things to the urologists, but know its typical……my husbands tumor was attached to the muscle in the bladder and was 5cm…so they did alot of scraping, your case could be much simplier depending on whats in there………we went to our grandsons baseball games, cath and all, just wore knee length shorts…you’ll be good!!!

ParticipantThanks Tinkerbell,
My tumour is 2.7cm and they suspect its low grade, shaped like a mushroom, so everyone is very confident about the outcome. I’m just looking forward to the burning going away!
May 24, 2013 at 1:39 am #15558tinkerbelle
ParticipantEddie,
Oh yes the burning, remember his commenting and how bad I felt for him, you are low grade, small tumor, Gene was stage 3 and muscle invasive so BIG difference……his was attached to the upper left hand side , its all so complex isn’t it..
you are much younger, it all makes for a good outcome for you!!! you caught it early…..I applaud your ability to move forward and get her over with………June 6, 2013 at 10:53 am #15613Anonymous
InactiveWe are fortunate to say that Dr. Morgan, Mike’s Radiation Oncologist has agreed to do another radiation treatment to try to help ease Mike’s excruciating pain. He goes today June 6, to Ottawa for a one-shot deal that we are hoping will give him some relief from the pain in his pelvic bone.
He also sees the Infectious Diseases doc on June 12 to see if they can remove his PICC line and keep him on oral antibiotics.
Keep everything crossed for us!

ParticipantHi gang I’ve been away on vacation for the last month to Alberta visiting with my big brother. I had a wonderful time and was spoiled rotten. I’m back now and getting ready for my 6 month check-up on June 18th. I wish everyone the best for the month of June. Looks like I have lots of catching up to do with all the posts while I was “missing in action”. Good luck everyone 🙂
