My husband has already had his muscle-invasive tumor removed (this past June.) Up next: PET scan Aug 6th, CG chemo starting Aug 15th. What a fun summer (actually, it has been so far. Cancer can be freeing!)

I have my CT scan on August 14. Scanziety! I noticed Sibotak is having PET scan? I have heard that PET scans are better than regular CT’s. Here in Saskatchewan we don’t have PET scans. In fact, today when I picked up my contrast at the hospital, I asked them if they have a PET scanner and they just looked puzzled.

Wishing everyone all the best with their tests and/or procedures!

Yeah, Tracey, my question was: if PET scans are superior, why are we also doing a CT scan?! I keep forgetting to ask the doc about that. Anyone know why a doctor would do both?

I have no idea why a doctor would order both types of CT.

CT and PET scans are often used together because they enhance one another and give more info, particularly on cancer where 90% of PET scans are used. The PET seems to indicate activity within the tumours whereas the CT simply gives an image. That’s about as simplistic as it gets I suppose, but this was recently explained to me – most of the explanation went right over my head. PET scans are also sometimes not covered by OHIP in some situations (like mine) and they are not cheap.

CT for me Aug 15th to see if lymph node involvement has changed since last scan in May…fingers crossed. Aug 25th – ultrasound to check out neo. Greg, I might take you up on your offer re: Medical Oncologist appointment since I got bumped from Aug 28th to Sept 4th. Aaaah, the peverbial waiting game.
