Hello all!
So here is a topic that I’ve heard a few times over the last couple of months. When can a bladder cancer survivor donate blood?
As some of you may know I am one of the “lucky” ones being diagnosed with low grade Ta Stage and I haven’t had a recurrence over almost 2 years (so far).
I just found out that I have O negative blood and as it is a universal donor, I would like to get out there and paint Blood Services red.
Anyone know if I’m allowed?

I think you need to chat with Blood Services directly. It can depend on when you had your last treatment, whether you currently take any medications etc.

I’ll call their main number – 1 888 2 DONATE (1-888-236-6283) and find out.
Thank you!

Eddie,
You are on the right track…as Leva advised. Here is some info I found on the Canadian Cancer Society website regarding blood transfusions…
“Donating after cancer: Several conditions and diseases may mean a person can’t donate blood, including a diagnosis or history of certain cancers. Different blood collection services may have slightly different guidelines to determine if cancer survivors can donate blood.
People who donate blood should be healthy and meet certain health-related criteria. Contact Canadian Blood Services or Héma-Québec to find out if you can be a blood donor after your cancer treatment. They also have information about the different types of and criteria for blood donations.”

So in the meantime, no donations 🙁
Thank you all for your feedback!

However that being said, maybe you could ask about volunteering time at the blood donation clinic? I’m sure that they’d appreciate it. But at least we found out now and know that cancer strikes us out as donors. They’d probably want to be sure that we don’t have cancer floating around in our blood and would risk passing it on? I don’t know how real a risk that is – does anyone have any knowledge of this?
