Just a quick note about catheters and surgery recovery. The surgeon sent me home with a catheter for one week. After removal of the catheter I had allot of pain during my first voiding period, if you where catheterized you probably know what I mean. I know it was a bladder spasm, now it just hurts when my bladder muscle contracts while urinating. Is this common and how long does it normally last for?
April 22, 2018 at 11:16 am #31308marysueParticipantI never had to go home with a catheter after surgery. When it was removed in hospital I was sore while urinating and I did have bladder spasms as well. My bladder does not take well to intrusions. Everything subsided within 24-48 hours.
Drink lots of fluids to keep your urine diluted. I mean lots. Leave off caffeine if you can. It tends to irritate the bladder. If your symptoms don’t subside in a day or so or get worse I suggest getting checked for a UTI. Bladder infections are common after catheterization. Watch for cloudy funny smelling urine, fever, chills and possibly abdominal pain. (((HUGS)))
April 22, 2018 at 3:48 pm #31312Jack MoonKeymasterI like Susan was never sent home with a catheter after all 3 Turbts I have had. My Uro would not release me from the hospital until the urine was clear. I had some burning and a few spasms for about 48 hours. I agree with Marysue if not better with-in a few days I would get checked for UTI.
All the best,

I guess that means that there will be no follow up care with explanations in how the surgery went or what the next step will be unless I talk very quickly during the cystoscopy. Whatever happened to follow ups and consults before and after procedures. I live in Edmonton is this normally how they treat us patients. I understand that the Urologists are grouped together here and are pretty much doing their own thing. Maybe this means that I cannot go for a second opinion or get another doctor unless I want to be put on another long waiting list. Does anybody know if their are Urologists here that have a private practice with a good reputation as a surgeon that I might try to get in touch with.
I’m very sorry if I’m venting more than asking for direction. I phoned the number they gave me for home care and the nurse I was talking with is pretty much useless to me. I don’t think she understands english very well and after talking with her about the hematuria and the cramping while trying to void. Her advise to me was if it keeps up or gets worst I should go to the ER. I am a retired Paramedic I can certainly understand the reason for this but I want to talk to the surgeon and find out if he expected my outcome to be like this when he sent me home; not wait 6-8 hours in the ER so they can write a note to the surgeon that I had been there.

JackApril 24, 2018 at 10:16 am #31334cheryl9ParticipantHello Fraser
I too was sent home with a catheter. Here in Saskatchewan TURBT is considered a day surgery. Yes, that initial voiding after taking the catheter out just about made me pass out. Better prepared the next time and after two more voids was okay.
Do not underestimate the power of fluids. While still fighting bladder cancer, if I had to void and not much came out, it was painful. Full bladder made voiding a breeze.
Also remember: even though it is in your bladder, a scab still forms and that scab eventually comes out. Takes 10-14 days and will usually include blood and what looks like clots. It is the scab. First time it happened to me I hit panic mode. My Uro politely explained to me what it was.
Hope this helps.
Take care
Cheryl
April 26, 2018 at 1:06 am #31352SparkyParticipantHad 2nd TURBT nearly 8 weeks ago + mitomyccin. Initially had bladder pain that subsided, but never went entirely away when voiding for a few weeks. It seemed to have stopped after about 3 weeks and wasn’t bothering me by the time the follow-up appointment with the doctor happened. He indicated surgery went well, and pathology results indicated non-aggressive cancer that hadn’t spread into underlying tissue or muscle. This past week the pain is back with a vengeance, with a small bit of blood sometimes. No signs of infection that I can tell, like fever, chills or cloudyness. With my first TURBT I had the scab come out after almost exactly 2 weeks. That didn’t happen this time. I am wondering if it could be the scab coming out this late — can that happen? If so, it hasn’t made it out yet! Tried to call urologist’s office today but no-one was picking up.
April 26, 2018 at 12:27 pm #31357Fraser255ParticipantHello and thank you for your comments and advice, I have not received relief from pain while voiding yet. I do think it may be because of difficulties I have had while voiding for many years now due to a rupture of my urethra. I have had difficulty urinating for years now not being able to have a clear good stream of urine while voiding. I was diagnosed as having a bladder hernia during my scope with a tumor at the top neck of a wide open 18mm hernia and it makes a little sense to me reading somewhere that for people with bladder hernias there may be a site that urine continually aggravates and could cause tumors. I was always told my problem was an enlarged prostrate but I had a CT scan a few weeks back and my prostrate and everything else appears normal except the badder hernia and a 2gram tumor that has since been removed. Maybe I should not be jumping around on this forum but I have had some good news and bad. I have moved onto the non-muscle invasion site now as I consider this good news. If you can help or we may have some things in common and would like to follow my progress through bladder cancer and results please join me there. Stay Well.
