ParticipantCan any of our American friends explain the sanity or insanity of Black Friday to me? I find Boxing day sales now Boxing week sales crazy enough. Nor do I see the sense in cross border shopping unless you live really close to the border. I know of several people here in my hometown that make trips to the US for Black Friday and cross border shop regularly insisting that the bargains are worth the effort. However I have to ask where are the savings if it involves several hours of driving (cost of gas) and maybe even an overnight stay in a hotel?

ParticipantIt is a rather strange name for a “shopping day”. But here is the answer. In the U.S. most retail stores run in the red, like the U.S. government). Most of the profit is made after Thanksgiving, in particular, the day after Thanksgiving (I know, that is weird too). the enormous amount of sales made of the day after Thanksgiving (which by default os always a Friday) brings the retail stores assets back into the black (unlike the U.S. Government). So therefore it is black Friday, or so they hope. Imagine having to rely on one day to keep profit margins in the black. In reality though, people really don’t save all that much, if anything. The outrageous low prices on a few things brings people in and they end up buying lots of other stuff which is not priced low. It’s all a game. I did some checking on this last year and found that (as an example) the big wide screen for $100 is really a different model than the wide screen people think they are getting. It’s el cheapo. And very often they could get something better and/or similar from Amazon say with free shipping. Oh maybe it would cost a few bucks more, but you don;t wait in line for 12 hours and then get trampled later. It’s pretty stupid. I mean no offense to those who do the black Friday thing, really I don’t. Sometimes a person can go in for that one thing, that one big bargain, buy nothing else and come a big winner. And many people are strapped for money. And there are those who just love the adrenalin rush. Most people would think some things I do are pretty darn stupid, and they’re right. So there you have it. It’s all about getting into the black profit margin. For those who hate it, they don;t don;t have to go. For those who love, well, it seems like a great adventure.

KeymasterSo we have red then black and now Greg says white.
Seems like a very confusing day this Friday after US Thanksgiving.
So the stores lower the prices to thank the customers and the customer returns the thanks by putting them into the black. I get it Thanksgiving.

ParticipantI tried to complicate it as much as I could. Thanks for setting me straight Jack and Greg. I still don’t get Boxing Day though. I also still hate chickens and I never boxed with a chicken. I did have a chicken in a box once though.

ParticipantSeems like Good Friday and Black Friday should trade names.
I mean the biblical Good Friday…wasn’t really all that good, should be Black Friday.
And getting sales seems like a candidate for Good Friday .I think someone wasn’t paying attention
