Bladder Cancer Remembered: Merry Christmas to All

T’was the night before Christmas on discussion panels,
Our patients were warm in their hospital flannels.
Their socks were all hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes St Cystoscopy soon would be there.
New catheters hung on the green Christmas tree
Just waiting to instill some blue B. C. G.
But some of the patients had lost valued parts,
Their bladders, their prostates, urethras for starts.
While some had a neo and some had a bag,
Still others a pouch – but we all mustn’t brag!
For all, bladder cancer had shocked to the core,
And driven the pious to knees on the floor.
“How could I have cancer?” “Why me?” “Will I live?”
They’d asked for our help just to see what we’d give.
So onto the web site, and out of despair
As other survivors expressed wondrous care:
You’ll visit your uro the rest of your life
And not miss a session whatever it’s strife.
You’ll take all your treatments, endure any pain,
Expose all your privates and blush quite in vain.
You’ll hold in the chemo, you’ll void while you scream,
And thank God for nurses and docs on your team.
You’ll worry as doctors’ appointments arrive
But know you are fortunate to be alive.
You’ll pray that the cancer will never progress,
But know if it does we will love you no less.
We’ll comfort, encourage, inform and provoke,
We’ll even try laughing at someone’s great joke.
We’ll pray for your healing, we’ll phone you or write,
We’ll urge you to never give up, but just fight.
You’ll feel like a truck has run over your chest,
But in Canada’s cancer wards, our docs are best.
On Bobby, on Darrel, on Michael, on Wes,
On Peter, on Alan, and others no less.
To the top of the pelvis, to the bladder disease,
Get rid of the cancer we ask of you, please.
And day ofter day with the care of a saint
They take us and save us and voice no complaint.
They’re heroes these surgeons who restore our lives
To carry on living as husbands and wives.
“God bless you” dear women and men of the knife,
Your skill with your tools has restored my life!
And all of the volunteers with B C C
Are wonderful people who help you and me.
There’s David, there’s Jack, how ‘bout Zina and Sue,
And Kiowa, Jeanne, Ken, and Ieva and you.
    With heart-felt compassion they give us their peace;
They answer our questions, our worries can cease.
No question too foolish, no comment too dumb,
When you’re told you have cancer your mind goes quite numb!
And these folks have been in exactly the spot
That you find yourself now, help from this place they got.
This year at this time when we celebrate friends,
Give your love to your family, pray that peace never ends.
But also join me as I ring out this call:
“Merry Christmas dear friends, and a good night to all.”
