KeymasterBCAN (USA) patient advocates have noticed that there are few resources on handling the emotional rollercoaster when bladder cancer returns after BCG. They have put together a fantastic webinar that features three patients (and a spouse) for whom their cancer returned after initial treatment. They faced the difficult decision of having their bladder removed or choosing additional medical treatment. Their stories will highlight the varying challenges they faced and how they dealt with them. This promises to be a great session- so mark your calendars for Wednesday, January 13 at 5:30pm EST. We will also have a Q&A at the end for your own questions.

ParticipantHi Jack,
Question, my BC has now referred for the third time in a year. It is my fourth time. There was a four year period of nothing and it has returned in an unpleasant way. Last year I had two BCG treatments, the first in February and March (6 weeks of treatment) and the second October through November, also 6 weeks. It has now returned and I had my TURBT on March 17. I met with my doctor yesterday and I will be starting Mitomycin on April 22 for six weeks. He has put me on Mitomycin as it appears that I have a resistance to BCG.
I have been wondering if this resistance could be from my BCG injection as a child in the UK. I had this inoculation due to a TB outbreak in the area I was living in.
Where do you think I would be able to locate any information about this.?
Thanks,
Judy

KeymasterHi Judy
I had a TB shot when I was young also like most people at my age level.
I have not heard that the BCG injection would interfere with a BCG instillation into the bladder.
Some people just do not respond to BCG treatments. I have many BC friends where BCG did not work to stop the recurrences.
My 1st 12 treatments did not stop recurrences, but since the 13th treatment I have not had a recurrence. I had a total of 30 treatments.
A good question for your doctor regarding the injection interfering with you BCG instillations.
Best of luck,
Jack
