<p style=”text-align: left;”>Hi Kim- It started with blood in urine once a month in May 2019 when I was 62. I had been 14 years in a hugely stressful relationship I just got out of. My job was stressful , too, and I got out of that next.

My urologist asked if I smoked or was beside second hand smoking. I did tobacco for 3 months ( like 2-3 cigarettes ) when I was 15 and some homegrown pot at weekend parties ( the light stuff not like it is today apparently!!)(when I was 14 and 15). He said no that wouldn’t have done it.
I was moved away to 100 Mile House in Grade 12; married at 17 and had kids at 19-20. And clean and straight for years as I ran a farm and business 24/7. I don’t smoke or drink at all.
My urologist then asked if I’d been near chemicals which I haven’t. The only thing I can think of was wood burning smoke I was around a lot of as I lived off the land isolated in the bush for years and only had wood heat. And we did a lot of land clearing lighting bush piles. But that was also years ago for 15 yrs. Surely that would have been cleared out of my system by 2019?
So…. He asked what did I do and as soon as I said I was a pro -athlete and a coach for kickboxing he shook his head said I was just one of the unlucky ones.

<p style=”text-align: left;”>So then I thought of my overall life being very stressful. Being discriminated ( I’m profound hard of hearing since spinal meningitis at 2 and lip read when possible)- and couldn’t get a job after I had to divorce- being poor with 3 kids- mom ( from cancer) and dad died when I was 25. My dear sister owned a pet store and let me work there.

<p style=”text-align: left;”>And in a bad relationship ( I read Louise Hay Blue book of healing for the spiritual meaning behind cancer and for bladder- I was pissed off at my situations). Louise states for bladder it is frustrations, anxiety , being pissed off. Ha- that’s good for thought so I said the affirmations to release all that. The emotional release i believe is important for the body to clear its energy fields to be able to restore itself.

But my urologist won’t buy the stress factor and the apparent research won’t support stress.

<p style=”text-align: left;”>I’m a believer in the chakras being cleared and balanced back to health. Makes sense to me. I’ve studied it and have seen remarkable healings .
So then -I figure ok – I got this thing and – it’s now to just get rid of it and stay rid of it hopefully. Not to pick up the old programs again. I had to release the issues in the tissues so to speak and keep clear with my energy flowing the way it’s designed to in the body.

Of course this is all my own beliefs.
<p style=”text-align: left;”>It really sucks to experience having cancer and the fears but I’m alive , learning, doing the emotional work, more aware and doing so well now.

Positive attitude all the way is my go to- Lots of daily affirmations and am big on gratitude plus spirituality and nature.
Sorry am on a book writing tangent here. I know you asked a simple question and I went off .
I’m happy to answer any questions anytime.

Joe from Bladder Cancer Canada hooked me up with a peer “bladder buddy “ soon as I was diagnosed- we still meet for walks and whenever I had a question she would help me. Joe has been a great help. It is wonderful to have this support as well as this forum and everyone else who are so knowledgeable to help.
Thankyou;

Cheers- Tana

Hi Tana and Kim:

I too, believe that stress can play a huge role in our health. I too, have read Louise Hay’s books and think that she was on to something. Other useful books are those by Dr. Gabor Mate whose most notable book “When The Body Says No” deals with this line of thinking. He just released another tome that he coauthored with his son, “The Myth of Normal”. I started reading it and got side tracked. It is on my must read list for this year. That book deals with some of the same thing plus how our lifestyle choices can play into our health issues.

Prior to being diagnosed with bladder cancer I’d come through a decade and a bit of extreme stress. I had very serious marital and financial issues. Financials were caused by hubby. I wanted to walk away from our marriage but stayed simply because with four kids, no money of my own, no job, out of date job skills plus facing major surgery (hysterectomy) at the time made it impossible to go out on my own. My youngest son also had health issues at the time. I know that I held onto the anger from that situation and other situations as well. Over the years my body has manifested lots of different “growths” which I believe is my body’s way of trying to let the bottled up anger out.

I also believe childhood trauma and issues can carry over into adulthood. For me, I had urological issues as a kid. I was born with a narrow urethra and kinked up/narrowed left ureter which by preschool age resulted in kidney stones, chronic bladder infections and just being prone to a lot of colds, tonsilitis etc. I had a urethra stretch surgery at age 6, six months later, the urethra stretch surgery and then a few months after that 2 major surgeries to correct the bigger birth defects and clear out the kidney stones. The surgeries were extremely invasive and involved a lot of doctors, nurses putting catheters, scopes etc. up the urethra which was very traumatic for me since no one bothered to tell me why this was being done to me. I think I processed it something akin to sexual assault. I suppressed those memories for years and then they resurfaced with the bladder cancer diagnosis. My first cysto exam set off flashbacks that kept happening for months until I figured out what it was. My childhood hospital stays were lengthy and horrid. The nurses at the time would gain your cooperation by threatening to tell your parents about your “bad behaviour” (crying and not being cooperative because you were scared) and that they would not be allowed to visit because of how you behaved. Today that would get them fired.

I too, did a lot of work to release all the anger, frustration etc. One of the biggest moments for me came from an energy healer who told me that I had to not only forgive those that wronged me but also to forgive myself for my past mistakes, choices etc. In short, I had to make peace with the past and let it go and learn to move forward. It took me until age 64 to learn that.

I’ve done the chakra and crystal thing. It helped some the first two times. This time around I turned more to my garden and found inner peace there. I’ve also found giving my house a super big clean when stressed is a good outlet as well. I clear my mind at the same time I clear my house. I’ve done a whole complete circle journey when it comes to religion and spirituality and have finally found my sweet spot with that.

I learned a lot during the first two go rounds with bladder cancer and a whole bunch more this past year dealing with it for the third time. I’m still a work in progress but I keep on keeping on. You both will too.

I think the main thing is to do what you can with what you can to maintain your health not only physically but mentally, psychologically, emotionally, spiritually as well. And that will look different for each one of us. Sorry for the book as well but this is a topic that I’m passionate about. All the best to both of you. ((((HUGS))))

Oh MarySue; Thankyou for sharing all that! It is my passion as well. I could write about more and maybe will in a book someday but I also feel once released there’s no need to bring it back into my field.
Yes I agree with doing the forgiveness of self -and saying I love myself- I am safe- I love and approve of myself. All sorts of building up stuff !

I’ve read Gabor Mates’ books as well.

Much Love  and Light ;

Onward we go and yes we are works in progress doing our best.

Cheers ;

It has been sometime that this thread has no now comments.

Did you find anything relevant about homeopathy? I grew up with homeopathic medicine (as well as my kids) but I found it hard to get it here, in Canada.

Thanks!

Hi Moose;

I am very open to homeopathic remedies and have used them on and off for different reasons. I had a little kit I bought online with the remedies that I’ve used most of them. One was Staphysagria for the urinary; uti issues I’d get from the BCG. I’d have to get the booklet out to recall all I took.
But yes I do use homeopathy. It’s hard to say how well they work but I wonder if my intention that they do helps. I often use arnica and others. The alive or choices health store has them.

Thanks for your reply Tana. I am also in BC and I have bought homeopathy at Choices and Amazon. There was/is a pharmacy in Vancouver called Finlandia, I don’t know if they are still around. However, my challenge is to know what to take without a Dr. guidance…

BTW, thanks for the Inspire Health link. I found they have a MBSR program that I will try to join.

Cheers,

Hi Moose- I should add that I had a naturopath doctor as part of my care team. She would know my bladder was inflamed before a cystoscopy would confirm it and she had me on liquid potion drops to alleviate the inflammation which helped a lot and also the pee urgency I had severely. Rena tox was one I remember.

thanks for the update! I will need to find a local Dr…

How the rest of the care team dealt with an “alternative medicine” Dr. presence?

Thanks once again!

Hi Moose-

I read up on homeopathy; I did talk to a Natures Fare staff for help what to take; and I read the booklet I got with the kit to ascertain what to take. The marvel of it is there’s no harm.
As far as telling my r”regular doctors “ what I do and take -: I don’t!
I study things myself and go by intuition.
When I said to my urologist after he said I’m just unlucky to get the cancer I said well it was the emotional stress from an unhealthy relationship and he wouldn’t buy it.
I also use Back remedies ( am using one for peace right now) ; I am a bio energy healing practitioner and seen results from emotional blockages and other blockages released and I received several sets of healings from others and did also on myself.
Yep!

Well, I would not expect that an Urologist would talk about the role of emotions, it is not what they study…

Haha-very true!
I didn’t expect he would – I just wanted to know what he thought of stress itself as a cause.

I see a Sho- tai healer now and this guy is amazing( muscle testing) – has got my energy ; liver ; kidneys back to balance. And my digestion.

Hi Tana and Moose:

I too, have wondered about how stress plays a role in illness in our lives. I’ve lived a long and very difficult life and do believe that it has been a contributing factor.

I support alternative and complementary health remedies as personal choices with the caveat that a person be careful of what they are using or taking if they are undergoing traditional treatments. When I was doing BCG treatments I stopped taking my vitamins and supplements the day before each treatment and didn’t resume again until a couple of days post treatment. I never asked anyone about it. Like you Tana, I went by intuition.

I have rotated in and out with use of an energy healer, acupuncture, meditation, prayers, crystals, herbs, essential oils, using those Japanese pads on the bottom of your feet to draw out toxins, the works. I’ve also done a lot of yoga – sticking with simple poses due to back and hip issues. Right now, I’m currently working with a very knowledgeable chiropractor who supports the use of complementary health modalities. She is also an acupuncturist. She has me doing a special set of stretching exercises to support my hips and back and they have helped tremedously as long as I stick with doing them regularly.

Traditional doctors generally do not have much if any training in alternative, homeopathic, complementary health care. Many don’t even have basic nutrition training and will pooh pooh any mention of taking any vitamins, supplements or eathing more of a certain thing like green veggies. I haven’t bothered to tell my GP or uro about any of this knowing that they don’t have much if any knowledge of this stuff.

I have also found that even many dieticians don’t support vitamins and supplements. One that came to do a presentation at a cancer support center that I was at stipulated under no certain terms should people be taking any sort of vitamins or supplements. People should get all their nutrition from foods. She faced a lot of backlash at that presentation. I told her that many cancer patients cannot get enough nutrition from just food because of their illness and may have damaged intestines that don’t allow for proper absorption and it is crucial for the extra boost from smoothies, greens powders and other sources. I also told her that I had been advised by the BCG clinic to take extra vitamin D to help make my BCG treatments more effective. I have no idea what she would have thought of the use of an energy healer or meditation etc.

Thankfully, with health food stores and natural health practitioners around we can seek their counsel and educate ourselves.

In my 18 year journey dealing with bladder cancer, I have learned that we have to educate ourselves, be our own advocate and develop a sixth sense of what is best for ourselves. Despite the challenges of doing all this, I have realized that it gives a patient their power back when the cancer has tried to take it away. If a person lets a doctor or doctors make all the decisions about their health care and doesn’t bother to give any input or ask questions then that is giving your power away.

Case in point – many years ago when I was attending one of Bladder Cancer Canada’s in person meetings, I spoke with a lady who wanted to start a support group for bladder cancer patients in her area. She approached me knowing that I had a group going at the time and wondered how to go about it. After a lengthy conversation she revealed that she left all decisions about her bladder cancer care up to her hubby and her son who was a physician. She had very little if any medical knowledge about her situation and didn’t want to know anything about it. When I heard that I asked how she could expect to run a support group with no knowledge of bladder cancer. I told her that a support group is not the same as a social group. People would come into the group with hard questions and expect to get some discussion about potential answers about where to go for supports. I also told her (despite it being none of my business) that it would be wiser for her to take an interest in what was happening with her health because if she was leaving the decisions up to others she wouldn’t have any empowerment. She gave me the blankest of stares and walked away.

And so it goes…

You are right Marysue- love your reply here- we go have to educate ourselves be intuitive and be our own advocate for sure.
oh and your last statement saying be empowered by knowing ourselves …….

No need to add to that!
thanks Marysue- excellent post!
Cheers Tana
