In the months leading up to discovering my first tumour, I noticed a strange odour from my urine. My doctors have just discovered a second tumour (surgery coming up March 21), but I already suspected it was there because, again for several weeks, I noticed the same odour.
Has anyone else noticed this? Is there any research going on about this phenomenon, or am I just crazy? Ron.

    Hi Ron

    You are far from crazy.

I have had odor from urine during several UTI’s but not before any cystos or turbts. But that is only my experience.

I have definitely noticed changes in urine door from time to time, not related to infections. I’m not sure if they are due to new tumour growth or not  (I have had at least 2 recurrences now). You are not nuts. I have recently noticed changes in the door of my urine, and am going in for TURBT #4 this week. We’ll see.

    Hi KiltmakerRon:

I have noticed changes off and on over the years dealing with BC.  I get a really foul almost dead mouse odour when I get a UTI and a sulphur smell if I eat veggies like broccoli, cabbage etc.  Eating fruits like dark cherries and blueberries does the same thing.  I never had this prior to being diagnosed.

I also had a strange almost musky smell to my urine while undergoing BCG treatments.  That went away a few weeks after treatments were finished.  During this time my bowel movements also smelled really foul – like a strong manure/sewer smell and again the smell vanished a few weeks after BCG was finished.

So, I think to answer your question – no, you are not nuts and yes I think with some people changes in their urine tell them that something is going on.  I’m not a doctor so I can’t say for sure, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the odour issue is due to the changes in composition of your urine if a tumour is present.   If it turns out that that is your body’s way of alerting you to an issue within your bladder that is a good thing because at least you have some kind of a heads up as weird as it seems.

Many people notice some unusual symptoms when a disease is present but yet unknown.  I had a strange back ache just prior to my first diagnosis of BC in 2008 (before blood appeared in my urine) and had it again in the summer of 2010 just before going in for my cysto.  That pain was happening again, just before a small amount of blood appeared in my urine and sure enough at the cysto exam a small tumour was discovered on the top right of my bladder.

I’ve never had that back pain since.  When I asked the clinic nurse about it she told me that some people get “referred” pain – pain that occurs in a different area of the body from where the issue is.  So, I monitor myself for urine changes and pay attention to my back. ((((HUGS))))

Good luck with the upcoming surgery coastaldoc. ((((HUGS))))

FOLLOW UP: Thanks so much to everyone who participated in this discussion. I just want to let you know that I had my TURBT for the cancer recurrence two days ago. I’m feeling great & it went so fast that my wife missed her chance to talk to the surgeon because she went for a coffee … so, fast is probably GOOD, right?
The fascinating thing is that the weird smell to my urine that initiated this post is GONE!!! Perhaps I need to leave my nose to medical science, or become a perfume tycoon, or a wine critic … the possibilities are endless! Ron.

    Hi Ron

Glad the Turbt is out of the way. Yes fast is usually good. Your nose could make medical history.

Just love how positive you are!

    All the best,

    Jack
