Hi all: I am very new to this site and am wondering if there are any older men out there who have had their bladder removed. My husband is 80 yrs. old and, although in good health, is very nervous about this operation. I would love to hear from anyone who has come through it successfully in this age group.

I’ve not had to face that myself but I would like to suggest that you have a “quality of life” discussion with your doctor due to your husband’s age. This is a really big surgery for anyone let alone someone 80 years old. You need to make sure that the doc doing it has lots of experience with this kind of surgery and can give you answers regarding this. You both must come to the conclusion that the surgery and the quality of life he could have post op will be worth the journey. Best of luck and keep in touch.

Although he is 80 yrs. old he is very good shape and extremely healthy (honestly he could pass for 70) so we are hoping for the best.

RC (bladder removal) is major surgery no matter what age. The key is your current health…your husband seems to be enjoying great health and for that reason I suspect Dr. Black is very comfortable with moving forward. There are many of us not in nearly as great health and at much younger ages. The name Dr. Black rings a bell as I seem to recall another Bladder Cancer Patient who has posted on this site from your area is seeing him. If I recall correctly, the report on him would indicate your husband is in really good hands. Having said that, I would encourage your husband to get a second opinion…Dr Black should not mind as all the good ones support that route.
If you need help with finding a Urologist in your area for a second opinion I’m certain that Jack Moon , President, Bladder Cancer Canada would be more than happy to help out. Or, simply send an email to BC Canada the address of which is on this site.
I wish you and your husband the very very best…we are thinking of you with many prayers for a favourable outcome….please keep in touch.
May god bless,
Rick

It is much too late for a second opinion as the operation is scheduled for Aug 12th and we have waiting for a few weeks. But, the first specialist we saw was the first one to say he had to have his bladder removed and then when we saw Dr. Black another specialist was also there and he agreed with Dr. Black – so you could say that there have been other opinions.

The 12th is very close so best wishes with thoughts & prayers for a favourable outcome…we look forward to hearing from you as your husband’s cancer free health improves…
God bless,
Rick
