We have more than one type of mosquito. We also have a few cases of West Nile and no the Nile doesn’t run through Calgary either. I think all cases except a couple were contracted outside of the province. We were told that the moquito that carries the virus comes out later in the summer season so I take precautions by not staying out in the evening. The first mosquitoes that come out in June are the 3 foot long prehistoric kind that pack a whollop of a bit and yeah I swear that they have headlights and landing gear as well and the ones now are so tiny you can hardly see them. They must use a special “shield” or something. ONe thing I noticed this year is that we have an abundance of dragon flies – all types from the tiny blue damsel flies to the helicopter sized 6-8 inch black ones. They eat a ferocious amount of mosquitoes. I wish cities would encourage those predators and not spray with chemicals. So far I think spraying has been kept to a minimum in Calgary.
